Expand the application field of new resin products

Resin products can not only be used in the production of mold heat insulation panels, but also in the product design and development category of the ANTEC annual meeting, high temperature resistance is also one of the concerns of researchers. For example, polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) is well known for its heat resistance. "However, the inherent brittleness of PPS limits its use in applications that require elasticity and toughness, such as metal pipes or oil and gas piping systems," said the authors from Celanese Advanced Engineered Materials. Their paper evaluates a new elastic PPS with heat resistance up to 165°C and low temperature impact strength. A comprehensive study presents the material's mechanical, thermal and corrosion resistance properties, as well as barrier/permeability properties.

At the same time, consumer electronics are often "hot" products, but they require low temperature shock resistance to prevent damage. Polycarbonate combined with polysiloxane (PDMS) makes for a tough, chemically resistant material for cell phone casings. But the authors from SABIC pointed to surface aesthetic issues such as pearlescence and gate redness that occur in these copolymers.

Their paper reports efforts to create PC-like material blends with good impact properties and aesthetics. It appears that the key is in the "chain structure" of the copolymer, specifically the distribution of PDMS fragments in the chain structure, which can form large chunks in the material, creating aesthetic issues. The solution is to provide a blend of the two copolymers of PC/PDMS.

Temperature and impact resistance are also a point of interest when discussing flame retardant compounds. In another SABIC paper in the alloys and blends category, author Vikram K. Daga presents phosphorus-based flame retardants for impact-resistant PC blends whose impact properties may be compromised by liquid phosphorus-based flame retardants destroy. In contrast, solid phosphorus-based flame retardants for thin-wall applications are used as an alternative, which do not impair impact resistance or heat resistance.
